Increasing Transparency and Communication
Public servants must always listen to their constituents and respond to their needs. The District Attorney's Office has a duty to listen and respond to the people of the City and County of Denver. The D.A.'s Office must also continue to publish detailed information about its work and practices.
In Depth:
To best serve the community, government institutions must continually seek the perspective of their constituents. The District Attorney’s Office is no exception. However, prosecutors often only get input from those directly involved in the criminal justice system – like police, jurors, witnesses, and victims of crimes. And while that can be a diverse group, it only offers a limited perspective about the work of a prosecutor’s office. I believe the district attorney must seek new ways to gather and utilize input from all types of community members. Among the policies I think could be beneficial is the creation a citizen’s council appointed by a diverse group of city leaders and consisting of individuals from across the city. The Denver District Attorney could then use the input from that citizen’s council to inform decisions on policies and priorities within the District Attorney’s Office. This way, we can gather input and gain new perspective from a wide variety of voices in our community – voices we may not otherwise hear.

I believe we should also ask the Deputy District Attorneys in the Denver DA’s Office to get out and into the community. I am advocating for the creation a liaison program between my office and interested community groups and law enforcement organizations to ensure that representatives from the Denver District Attorney’s Office are available and present to listen to citizens, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. Finally, I believe we must continue efforts to have representatives from the District Attorney’s Office visit community organizations to educate them about our work and listen to their concerns.
