Serving As
A Voice of Leadership In the Community

One of the central roles of the Denver District Attorney is to serve as the leader of the criminal justice system in Denver. The Denver District Attorney can lead positive change in criminal justice agencies, coordinating efforts among governmental partners, and advocating for better policies. I want to make sure all parts of our criminal justice system are working together to enforce the law and achieve just outcomes for the people of Denver.

In Depth:

The Denver District Attorney must act as the primary leader in the criminal justice system in Denver. A broad array of organizations enforce the laws in the City and County of Denver. Those include the Denver Police Department, the Denver City Attorney’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado – to name a few. However, as the only elected law enforcement official in Denver, the Denver District Attorney is uniquely positioned to identify the community’s priorities and provide leadership to ensure different organizations are coordinating their efforts effectively and efficiently.

I believe the Denver District Attorney must ensure that the various law enforcement agencies in Denver are working together to effectively enforce the state, local, and federal laws. That means constantly communicating between agencies and working to ensure each is taking advantage of its unique personnel and resources to effectively enforce the law. The District Attorney can work with the office of the Denver Mayor to ensure that different units within the city are working together to look for stolen cars and other stolen property. The District Attorney can also work with the United States Attorney to ensure that cases are prosecuted federally when that is useful or beneficial. The District Attorney can also work with the Mayor and the Chief of Police to make sure that the Denver Police Department is properly deploying its resources to the maximum effect.

Additionally, and most importantly, I believe the Denver District Attorney must serve as a voice for the people of Denver, to speak about how we must work together to improve our community and our safety. The community is best served when the Denver DA serves not only as the leader of the lawyers and staff within the District Attorney’s Office, but also as the voice for community members. I believe the Denver District Attorney must ensure that the people of Denver are represented every day as we work together to build a safer and more equitable community.

I'm always happy to engage with community members about how we can build a safer and more equitable Denver.
